Renault-Nissan: big plans for electric cars

Renault Nissan logoCarlos Ghosn, CEO of Renault-Nissan, has made a firm commitment: Renault-Nissan will be the world leader in the electric vehicle industry, and their efforts will be far-reaching and profitable.

And hopefully world-changing.

Renault-Nissan has teamed up with Silicon Valley-based electric vehicle startup Project Better Place. These are their plans:

  • 2010: Nissan will launch a battery-powered car in the U.S.
  • 2011: Renault-Nissan will introduce all-electric vehicles and a network of charging points in Israel and Denmark.
  • 2012: Renault-Nissan will offer a complete range of electric vehicles in every large car-market.

Ghosn highlights these major points:

Electric cars will be less expensive

Renault-Nissan's electric cars will be less expensive than equivalent gasoline-fueled models.

Project Better Place logoOnly better batteries are missing

Technically, everything is in place for electric vehicles to become mainstream, except for the batteries. He says that Nissan and NEC are investing massively in this industry, in order to improve range and recharge times.

A new way business model

Renault-Nissan's business model will be very different: car owners will subscribe to a battery-replacement and charging plan based on anticipated mileage. Recharging will be done at Project Better Place-built stations.

To summarize his commitment, Ghosn has said,

"We must have zero-emission vehicles. Nothing else will prevent the world from exploding."

Green Car of the Year finalists

Nissan Altima HybridThe L.A. Auto Show has named its five finalists for the Green Car of the Year Award established by Green Car Journal:

  • Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid
  • Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid
  • Mazda Tribute Hybrid
  • Nissan Altima Hybrid
  • Saturn Aura Hybrid

"The fact that all five Green Car of the Year nominees are hybrids this year is a clear indication that the auto industry's significant investment of time and resources into gasoline-electric hybrid technology is paying off," said Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of the Green Car Journal.

"Hybrids were not a specific focus during our nomination process. There are many pathways to achieving efficiency and emissions goals, and hybrids, while popular, represent just one of these."

Among the jurors: Carl Pope, executive director of the Sierra Club; Christopher Flavin, president of Worldwatch Institute; Jean-Michel Cousteau, president of Ocean Futures Society; and Jonathan Lash, President of the World Resources Institute.

Renault-Nissan still wants U.S. partner

Carlos Ghosn CEOLast year there were talks of a possible alliance between current partners Renault-Nissan and General Motors, but nothing came of that.

But the flame looks to still alive... Carlos Ghosn, CEO of Renault and Nissan, recently stated at a Nikkei automotive conference that “if I have the opportunity to make it happen, I will do it.”

Ghosn also said that the Renault-Nissan alliance is “the only automotive alliance which works... when something works, you have a tendency to want to expand it.”

So reports Automotive News.

Top automakers in China

Shanghai Volkswagen plantWho are the top automakers in China?

As you may know, all of the major manufacturers have joint ventures with local Chinese car companies, with varying results.

Currently, the big winners are Volkswagen on the foreign side, and Shanghai Auto on the local side. Both have stakes in two of the top three performers in China. Of note is Chery, the only Chinese car company to make the list as an independent automaker, i.e. without a joint venture.

Here are the top eight, based on August 2007 passenger car sales as reported by the National Passenger Cars Association:

  1. Shanghai Volkswagen, 42,518 units
  2. FAW-Volkswagen, 42,460 units (FAW is First Auto Works)
  3. Shanghai General Motors, 39,662 units
  4. FAW Toyota, 27,500 units
  5. Chery Automobile, 26,446 units
  6. Dongfeng Nissan, 24,712 units
  7. Guangzhou Honda, 20,626 units
  8. Beijing Hyundai, 17,414 units

Shanghai Volkswagen logoThe top three are on track to become the top sellers for the entire year, all reaching the 400,000 to 500,000 mark.

India auto industry update (Part 6): Renault-Nissan in India

As a provider of dealer management systems to automobile dealerships in several emerging markets, we closely follow what happens in the auto industry in key regions around the world. I thought it might be interesting to share some of that information.

In the world's major markets, auto sales are slowing at the same time that competition increases, so global auto manufacturers are setting their sights on big emerging markets like the BRIC countries: China, Russia, Brazil and India.

This series briefly discusses the promising future of the automotive industry in India. We've already looked at what GM, VW, Honda, and Ford are doing in India. Now let's take a look at partners Nissan and Renault.

Nissan and French carmaker Renault form a very tight alliance, though they are not actually merged. Renault owns a 44.4% stake in Nissan, while Nissan owns 15% of Renault. Nissan is the world's ninth largest car maker, Renault the tenth, in terms of unit sales. Together they own a 9.6% global market share.

The two companies are autonomous units, and achieve savings through jointly owned distribution subsidiaries in a range of European countries, as well as by reducing the number of suppliers that deliver parts to both firms. If you're interested in the alliance, read more at the BBC.

Nissan in India

Nissan logoJapanese carmaker Nissan has a subsidiary in India: Nissan India.

Nissan currently offers two models in India, the X-Trail compact SUV and the Teana sedan. But, like all of the other major manufacturers, Nissan and Renault have their sights set on launching a low cost car specifically designed for the Indian market.

Nissan's low cost car for India

Project 1: Nissan and Suzuki (scratched)

In September 2006, Nissan and Suzuki announced plans to jointly set up a car plant in India to produce a low-cost vehicle. But just two months later Nissan backed out and instead joined forces with its parent Renault, who had a plan to work with their existing partner, Indian manufacturer Mahindra & Mahindra. (Nissan will, however, continue its arrangement to source a compact car from Suzuki's Indian arm Maruti Udyog, but for Europe.)

Project 2: Nissan, Renault, and Mahindra (ongoing, maybeabout to be scratched?)

The idea is to build a $3,000 car in a joint venture with Mahindra and Mahindra, a local maker of tractors and utility vehicles.

The $3,000 target has become a sort of holy grail for all of the majors. Indian manufacturer Tata Motors threw down the gauntlet last year when they announced plans for a $2,300 "People's Car" to be launched in 2008. Tata's will be the world's cheapest car.

The current price leader is the Maruti 800, at $4,500. Maruti is controlled by Japan's Suzuki Motor, and owns a whopping 50% of the Indian car market.

Carlos Ghosn, CEO of Renault-Nissan, says that Nissan's upcoming low-cost car will not compete directly with Renault's Logan.

"One car manufacturer says it is to bring a $3,000 car to India next year and it is a challenge we take seriously. We will be ready when the car comes to the market, we will have enough information, research, discussion. Our obvious partner is Mahindra and we are working with them, but we have not finalized any agreement yet," said Ghosn.

The idea of the super cheap car is to lure buyers from among India's 45 million drivers of scooters and motorcycles.

Of Nissan's awaited entry into the ultra low-cost segment, the Bangkok Times says "... this cost-effective car is under study for Thailand, Russia, China, India, South America and the Middle East."

Project 3: Renault and Bajaj Auto (maybe)

Some speculation triggered by comments from an alert reader.

Forbes reports that Nissan and sister company Renault may have a Plan B for the $3,000 car if, as they mention, Mahindra says they are not interested in the $3000 car (they seem to want to position themselves globally as a SUV manufacturer).

So Renault will now talk with Bajaj Auto Ltd., a local manufacturer of motorcycles and Vespa-style scooters. But neither side is saying much.

Renault in IndiaRenault logo

Renault and local tractor and auto manufacturer Mahindra & Mahindra created a joint venture, Mahindra Renault, in 2005, to manufacture and sell Renault's Logan car in India. Mahindra owns 51% of this 125 million euro project, Renault the remaining share.

Mahindra Renault has a plant in the city of Nashik that can produce 50,000 vehicles a year. This is where the Logan is now being built. The Logan costs between $9,700 (gasoline version) and $12,400 (diesel) in India.

The Logan is sold in India through Mahindra's existing dealer network.

Renault LoganMahindra Renault and Nissan are now investing $900 million to build a facility in Chennai, in southern India. The plant will be ready in 2009 and will have an output of 400,000 cars, among them the Logan. (Logans are also assembled in Russia, Iran, Colombia, Brazil and Morocco.)

Mahindra will own 50% of the new plant, Renault and Nissan 25% each.

Renault ultra low cost car

Renault logoFrench carmaker Renault says they are considering a super low-cost car specially geared towards emerging markets. It would be priced at under $3,000 dollars (2,200 euros).

Indian manufacturer Tata is supposedly introducing a low-cost car at that price point in January 2008.

This new model would be even cheaper than Renault's very successful Logan which costs around $8,500 dollars (6,400 euros). It will not be sold in major markets as it won't meet Western safety standards.

Renault Logan IndiaThe ultra low-cost car segment is expected to be huge as emerging markets, especially the BRIC (*) countries, are projected to have large and sustained growth. For example, the Indian market now stands at 1.3 million cars per year, with two thirds of that in small cars. Projected annual growth is 12 percent which means 3 million cars by 2016.

Renault's new car will be made in a new plant to be built in India via a partnership with local manufacturer Mahindra.

(*) BRIC stands for Brazil, Russia, India and China. Goldman Sachs coined the term in 2004 in a report they published that stated that the BRIC countries would surpass the G7 in 40 years.

India auto industry update (Part 1)

India Taj MahalAs a provider of dealer management systems to vehicle dealerships in several emerging markets, we closely follow what is happening in the auto industry in key regions around the world. I thought it might be interesting to share some of that information.

When pondering where the main opportunities lie in the automotive industry, we automatically think of China.

However, India is also a huge market that presents an incredibly promising scenario.

The Indian internal market will be the fastest growing among auto producing nations over the next five years, and the second fastest among all nations (behind China). The main growth in India will be in light vehicles: vans, small trucks and compact cars.

In India, seven people per 1,000 own a car. Compare that to 450 in the U.S. and 500 in Western Europe and you get an idea of the market potential. And the demand is there. India's middle class continues to grow, currently standing at 216 million. About half of India's 1.1 billion people will be between the ages of 15 to 49 at the end of the decade.

Car sales in 2006 were up 22 percent, reaching 1.076 million units, helped by interest rates that have fallen by 50 percent in the past five years. And sales are expected to grow at least 10% annually until 2010.

Exports are also expected to grow significantly. In 2006 only 200,000 were exported, but that number is expected to reach one million by 2010. Hyundai, the second-biggest carmaker in India, leads the way here.

Mini-cars represent around 70% of the auto market in India, roughly 1 million cars. This is where the main push looks to be coming from most manufacturers.

Until 15 years ago, and after decades of protectionism, there were only a handful of auto manufacturers in India: Maruti Suzuki

That changed in 1991, and now, of course, all of the major manufacturers are vying for entry.

GM, Honda, Volkswagen, and a half dozen other auto companies have announced investments of over $6 billion on new factories. Fiat, Nissan, and Renault are also in the game, but their strategy is to link with local manufacturers.

More on the India strategy of each manufacturer in upcoming posts.
