Luxury cars in China: BMW and Hyundai-Kia

Kia Barui MohaveA recent post talked about the paradox in China's automotive policy: the government wants manufacturers to make electric and hybrid cars, but at the same time price controls on gas are motivating the sale of SUVs and luxury cars.

Here's what some of the major carmakers are doing in China:

BMW in China: Will triple capacity by 2012, from 35,000 to 100,000 annual units, via their joint venture with Brilliance China. Car sales grew 43 percent (14,574 units) from January to March this year, after growing 42 percent in 2007.

Hyundai-Kia in China: Working to expand presence, Hyundai just opened second plant to achieve annual output of 600,000 units, Kia will open second plant in 2010. Have released two high-end vehicles, the Rohens (Genesis) luxury sedan, and the Barui (Mohave) luxury SUV.

Top automakers in China

Shanghai Volkswagen plantWho are the top automakers in China?

As you may know, all of the major manufacturers have joint ventures with local Chinese car companies, with varying results.

Currently, the big winners are Volkswagen on the foreign side, and Shanghai Auto on the local side. Both have stakes in two of the top three performers in China. Of note is Chery, the only Chinese car company to make the list as an independent automaker, i.e. without a joint venture.

Here are the top eight, based on August 2007 passenger car sales as reported by the National Passenger Cars Association:

  1. Shanghai Volkswagen, 42,518 units
  2. FAW-Volkswagen, 42,460 units (FAW is First Auto Works)
  3. Shanghai General Motors, 39,662 units
  4. FAW Toyota, 27,500 units
  5. Chery Automobile, 26,446 units
  6. Dongfeng Nissan, 24,712 units
  7. Guangzhou Honda, 20,626 units
  8. Beijing Hyundai, 17,414 units

Shanghai Volkswagen logoThe top three are on track to become the top sellers for the entire year, all reaching the 400,000 to 500,000 mark.

India auto industry update (Part 8): Hyundai in India

As a provider of dealer management systems to automobile dealerships in several emerging markets, we closely follow what happens in the auto industry in key regions around the world. I thought it might be interesting to share some of that information.

In the world's major markets, auto sales are slowing at the same time that competition increases, so global auto manufacturers are setting their sights on big emerging markets like the BRIC countries: China, Russia, Brazil and India.

This series briefly discusses the promising future of the automotive industry in India. We've already looked at what GM, VW, Honda, Ford, Renault-Nissan, reigning king Maruti Suzuki, and now we'll look at fast growing...

Hyundai in India

Hyundai logo

Hyundai's subsidiary in India is called Hyundai Motor India Limited. They manufactured some 300,000 units in 2006, 186,000 of which were sold in the domestic market, 114,000 were exported. They grew 18.5 % compared to 2005.

Hyundai has one plant in Chennai with a capacity of 300,000 units per year.

They are setting up a second plant at a cost of some $600 million, that will be adjacent to their existing plant. It should be ready by the end of 2007, also with an output of 300,000 units a year. The plant will also include an engine and transmission facility. And some 20 Hyundai vendors are also to set up plants near the plant at a cost of $200 million.

Hyundai has said that they want their India operation to be their export hub for compact cars and are investing accordingly. Their goal is to export 300,000 cars a year in 2008, almost three times their 2006 figure.

"My only problem," Lheem Heung-Soo, managing director of Hyundai India, recently said, "is limited capacity."

They are also increasing their dealer network from 183 to 250, and plan to have 1,000 service shops throughout the country by the end of 2007.

Hyundai low-cost cars

Hyundai Santro XingHyundai, of course, is a player in the entry-level subcompact segment in India. Their offering is the popular Santro, which has a starting price of $6,300, and comes with standard features such as air conditioning and power steering.

As for the ultra low-cost segment that is currently a hotbed of action, Hyundai's Lheem Heung-Soo recently said that the company has no current plans to enter this segment.

Regarding Tata's announced $2500 "People's car", Lheem Heung-Soo recently said, “I want to wish the proposed players (Tata Motors) the best of luck but I have a lot of doubt.”

Japan Car Wars: Here comes Hyundai

Mt. Fuji cherry blossomThe car wars are moving from the U.S., where Japanese automakers have had enormous success, to these manufacturers' home turf.

And Korean carmaker Hyundai, who has also done extremely well in the U.S., is planning a big move in Japan.

Hyundai's global sales reached 3.76 million units in 2006, more than Honda (3.55) and Nissan (3.27), but less than Toyota (7.92). And in the U.S., Hyundai sales have quadrupled; they sold 460,000 units in 2006.

In Japan, Hyundai has had no such luck. Their sales in 2006? A whopping 1,651 vehicles.

Hyundai logo

But here they come, and this is their plan:

Step 1: Improve quality.

Hyundai already placed ahead of Toyota in the J.D. Power 2006 quality survey.

Hyundai i30Step 2: Change sales strategy.

The previous focus was on luxury sedans, but Japanese consumers have been buying minivans and smaller cars for their better fuel economy. So Hyundai will now launch the i30, a compact five-door hatchback. They will accompany this with a major sales promotion effort

Step 3: Impart peace of mind.

Hyundai has implemented an incredible extended warranty for Japanese drivers: a "10 year, 100,000 kilometer" warranty was introduced this year. This includes the repair of any engine problems for free.

Hyundai's goal is to reach sales of 10,000 cars in Japan by 2010. Read more at Asahi.

Hyunda and Honda plans for China: local-brand cars

Chinese car manufacturers have a major dilemma regarding where to invest: attack huge and lucrative foreign auto markets, or address the burgeoning local demand? Conventional wisdom says they can't do both simultaneously and successfully.

Chinese automakers need to start creating strong brands if they want any chance of successfully reaching the major automotive markets (USA, Europe) with their own-brand cars. This in addition to improving quality and safety, and then improving public perception of these qualities.

If they want to own the local market, it won't be that easy as the big guns begin to move in.

Hyundai_logo_01 Hyundai and Honda are taking the battle right into China, by announcing their strategy to better penetrate that fast-growing market: they will soon begin to manufacture China-branded cars, in China, for sale in the Chinese market.

"We want to make our own-brand cars in China eventually and the plan is proceeding smoothly," a Hyundai spokesman told Reuters.

Hyundai currently builds the Korean Elantra and Accent models in China. But now Beijing Hyundai Automotive Corp. (a 50/50 venture between Hyundai and state-owned Beijing Automotive), is building a $65.86 million R&D facility in Beijing, partly for these planned new models. Sales will begin in 2008.

Honda (Honda Motor China) currently builds several models in China, including the Accord and Odyssey. China Daily recently mentioned that Honda also plans to develop a non-Honda brand in China. But Reuters says that "Honda's spokesman in China discounted the report, saying the venture had not worked out any plans about its next move."

Chrysler downsizing

Chrysler_building The story du jour is GM's "serious" bid to buy Chrysler, that goes hand in hand with Daimler's "serious" wish to sell. Read more here, a very good Business Week article that goes over the huge hurdles involved. They mention that Renault-Nissan and Hyundai are also interested.

One of GM's (or any prospective buyer, actually) main goals would be to streamline Chrysler (platforms, models, dealerships, union agreements, health-care costs). Note that Chrysler had already begun their own process in this sense, as you can see by last week's announced plans to:

  • Cut 13,000 jobs (through 2009), 11,000 in hourly jobs, 2000 salaried.
  •
  • Cut 400,000 units of annual production capacity.
  •
  • Spend $3 billion on new powertrains

Shutdown_1

  How? They plan to:

  • Close their Delaware plant that builds the Dodge Durango and Chrysler Aspen SUVs, in 2009.
  •
  • Cut a shift at their Michigan pickup plant.
  •
  • Cut a shift at their St. Louis minivan plant
  •
  • Close a parts distribution center in Cleveland.

China's Chery to build compacts for Chrysler

As posted previously, it looks like DaimlerChrysler will be commissioning Dodge-branded compacts from Chinese automaker Chery Automobile Co., for the Western European and North American markets.

Dieter_zetscheAccording to Reuters, DaimlerChrysler CEO Dieter Zetsche just about confirmed this at the Beijing motor show, though no date for an agreement was given.

Chrysler is already doing something similar with 2 Hyundai models:

  • The Atos mini is sold as a Dodge in Mexico
  • The Getz hatchback is assembled and sold as the Dodge Brisa in Venezuela.
