China's Nanjing revives MG
Recently defunct MG will soon be back from the dead, thanks to Chinese auto manufacturer Nanjing Auto, says The International Herald Tribune.
In 2005, Nanjing bought MG, its tangible assets, and the rights to some big brand names: MG, Morris, Austin and Austin-Healey. Most of the manufacturing equipment was shipped to Nanjing, and reassembled.
Nanjing will now start producing two MG models: the MG7 sedan, and the MGTF convertible (which they hope to soon export to Europe).
Many Chinese companies with money to spend have been taking this route: buying languishing or troubled big-name companies for quick access to world-class brands, technology, distribution networks and smooth entry to major markets. Notable examples are Lenovo, who bought IBM's PC business in 2004, Qianjiang, the Chinese motorcycle manufacturer who bought Italy's Benelli, and Shanghai Automotive, who took over South Korea's SsangYong.
