Toyota and Ford alliance update

Pretty vague and inconclusive, but according to Japan’s Nikkei business daily newspaper, Toyota President Katsuaki Watanabe says Toyota is open to a broader partnership with Ford, if the U.S. auto maker asks for it. This potential alliance would probably focus on technological development.

But the paper says no such talks have taken place.

In December, Toyota Chairman Fujio Cho and Ford CEO Alan Mulally met as the first step in potential partnership negotiations. But no alliance was discussed.

Chamco: another plan for Chinese cars to U.S.

Chamco_suv A new company called Chamco, or China America Cooperative Automotive Inc., showed vehicles made by Hebei Zhongxing Automobile Co. Ltd., a privately-owned Chinese automaker, near, but not at, the 2007 Detroit Auto Show.

Chamco is based in the U.S., in New Jersey to be precise, and their management includes executives from Malcolm Bricklin's failed Visionary Vehicles, which was supposed to import Chinese-made Chery cars to the U.S.

Chamco's CEO, Veechwin Li, says the company plans to sell a compact pickup truck (estimated price: $13,250) and a midsize SUV ($13,750), built in Mexico (!), in the U.S. by mid-2008.

Chamco also plans to:

    Have 150 U.S. dealers. Already they say they have 13 confirmed, 15-20 with verbal commitments

       
  •    
  •        

    Sell 75,000 vehicles a year in the first few years of the business

  •        

    Add a sedan and a crossover later on

       

The plan, or better said the timeline, seems far-fetched in my humble opinion. The vehicles don't meet U.S. emissions and safety standards, and there is as yet no brand name.

Eleven rules of choosing business management software: Rule 4

Here's another entry from our list of eleven "rules" to help guide small and medium sized companies when they evaluate potential suppliers of business management software.

Flexible gymnastRule 4: The system should be flexible

Not all dealers are the same. Different dealerships can have different ways of performing transactions, based on the brands they sell, or to the way they manage their business.

At the same time, each dealer and each employee may have their own needs and preferences when it comes to viewing and analyze business information.

The chosen software should be flexible to adapt to the dealer’s business processes; and not the other way round: i.e. in general, the dealer should not have to adapt its business processes to the system’s rigidity.

Of course there may always be a specific issue that the system does not contemplated in exactly the desired manner, but in a flexible and configurable system these cases will be minimal.

These are some examples of what a flexible system can allow:

Indicators

The modern dealer needs to view a Control Panel with indicators that instantly provide an x-ray of how the company is performing.

The dealer should be able to view the indicators suggested by its Manufacturer, as well as those of its own choosing. A good dealer management system will let the dealer define its own formulas for each indicator.

In addition, it is essential that the system automatically update the indicators so that they show the company’s status in real time.

Reports

A modern system should allow the user to easily create reports, and preview them before printing.

Today’s user needs to work freely with data, so it is essential that the system be integrated with Microsoft Excel®.

Ideally, once a report has been chosen, with just one click the user should be able to: (i) preview it on the screen; (ii) print it; (iii) export it to Excel; or (iv) export it to some standard format (PDF, Word, HTML, XML, etc.)

Many managers appreciate the possibility of viewing system reports over the Internet, whether from home or during a trip, to easily monitor the company.

Chart of Accounts

A flexible system allows the dealer to create its own chart of accounts, to obtain reports based on those accounts, or on generic accounts that include several other ones.

Accounting

The system should allow the dealer to indicate the exact accounting entries that each transaction and each voucher generates. For example, different accounting entries may be defined for each of the dealer’s stores.

Business Processes

A flexible system allows the dealer to define business processes according to its own way of doing things. For example:

1.  A supplier invoice may add stock, affect the supplier’s current account, and update accounting; or the dealer may choose to work with delivery receipts or packing lists from the supplier that only add stock, and then supplier invoices that update the current account and the accounting.

2.  The dealer will surely want to define the way its Parts Department and Cashiers print invoices. Some alternatives are:

a)  The parts employee enters the sales invoice into the system; the cashier enters the payment method and prints the invoice.

b)  The parts employee enters and prints the sales invoice. The customer approaches the Cashier, who issues the receipt indicating the payment method and the invoice that is being cancelled.

User Profiles

The system should allow each employee to be assigned a user profile that enables him or her to access only the information that is pertinent to them.

Shangahi Auto launches first own-brand car

A previous post talked about Shanghai Auto's plan to soon launch their own-brand Roewe 750, a car based on the Rover 75 platform they acquired from MG Rover back in 2004.

Shanghai has now unveiled their launch campaign for the Roewe 750, a mid to upper class car that will sell for $28,000 to $38,000. The advertising campaign includes flagpoles along major highways in Shanghai, and outdoor ads around the airport and city, including a huge ad wrapped around a 15 story office building.

Shanghai_automotive_hu_maoyuan_1 Hu Maoyuan, chairman of SAIC Motor, was quite clear on the company's plan to move their brand outside of current joint-ventures with GM and Volkswagen. "We hope to use Rover's reputation to gain a niche for the Roewe in both China and Europe."

Creating strong brands is a fundamental and necessary step if China hopes to successfully attack the major markets.

Toyota to build 5 plants in North America?

Toyota is thinking about building five more plants in North America, in order to boost output in the region, says Bloomberg Business News, though Toyota officials did not confirm the story.

Toyota_plant_georgetown One plant would be in the Southeast and another in Mexico. Toyota is already building a new plant in Ontario, and has announced they will use a Subaru plant in the state of Indiana to produce Camrys.

In 2006, Toyota built 1,544,790 vehicles in 6 North American plants.

Should you upgrade to Vista?

Vista_logo_1 Microsoft Vista, the new operating system replacement for XP,  has been in development for five years and is set to launch this month. We already know it has a host of new features, and that it will require more hardware than XP.

Some PC makers are even creating new PCs to coincide with the Vista launch:

       
  • Sony has unveiled a $1600 white, round-shaped living room PC media center.
  •    
  • Toshiba_portege_r400_1 Toshiba's Portege R400 notebook is glossy white and will leverage Vista features that make some applications (email, calendar) accessible while the computer is on standby, through a small display on the cover.

  • Hewlett-Packard has a $1900 TouchSmart PC, an "... all-in-one computer and touchscreen display designed to be used in a kitchen nook, family room or living room. It lets users scribble notes on the screen, quickly call up a recipe or watch TV or movies."
  •    

On the other hand, XP is a stable, powerful, successful, and ubiquitous operating system. It works with all available hardware. Applications run fine on it.

Ok, but should you upgrade to Vista?

You probably will end up doing so eventually, and starting soon, new PCs will probably ship with Microsoft Vista already installed. For now, I'm going to stick with XP.

You'll also learn the difference between all the Vista editions: Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, Enterprise, Ultimate, and the various manners in which you can upgrade.

Changfeng shows Chinese cars at Detrot Auto Show

Changfeng_logo_small Chinese automaker Changfeng Group Co. will be showing four of its Liebo (which translates to cheetah) brand vehicles at the Detroit Auto Show this month: two SUVs (the CS6 and CS7) and two pickups (the CY3 and CY6).

Changfeng is a relatively new player in the Chinese auto industry, and they are on the small side, with an output of some 100,000 cars per year. They have announced no specific plans for selling cars in the U.S., other than that they will begin to do so before the end of the decade.

This move seems to have a dual strategy:

       
  1. To begin the long journey of positioning their brand in order to one day enter the U.S. market,
  2.    
  3. To boost their image in the local Chinese market.

How to treat your people: Starbucks vs. Wal-mart

Starbucks_cups I just finished reading "My Sister's a Barista", a book about Starbucks and their meteoric growth. I very much enjoyed it and highly recommend it.

One of the major issues it discusses are Starbuck's guiding principles, the first of which entails creating a great workplace, and treating people with dignity and respect.

Contrast that with the latest announcement from Wal-Mart (and Target and Payless) about how they think they can wring even more out of their workforce. You can read more at Right Reality, but the gist of it goes something like this:

   

... new computerized scheduling systems will move many American workers from a predictable work shift to staffing based on the number of customers in a store at any given time. The system will allow managers to start the business day with a few employees on hand, then bring in "on call" workers when business picks up during the course of the day. Once commerce lags, the manager can send workers home until further notice. In short, it more closely matches staffing to customer demand.

Wal-Mart now asks its hourly employees to fill out a schedule of their availability, and encourages them to include a weekend window "if at all possible." This "personal availability form" states: "Limiting your personal availability may restrict the number of hours you are scheduled." The obvious implication is that the less flexible you are, you may find yourself in the manager's dog house and fall to the bottom of his call list.

A pretty stark contrast with how Starbucks sees things...

Toyota battles drunk driving

Seems like every forward-thinking news item in the auto industry has to do with Toyota...

Yahoo News reports that:

   

Toyota Motor Corp. is developing a fail-safe system for cars that detects drunken drivers and automatically shuts the vehicle down if sensors pick up signs of excessive alcohol consumption.

Drunk_driving_accident_01 It will work like this: if the sweat sensors in the steering wheel detect high levels of alcohol in the driver's bloodstream, the car just won't start. Simple.

And if sensors detect abnormal steering, or if a special camera shows that the driver's pupils are not in focus, the car slows to a halt.

Toyota #3 in USA

Three_headed_knight Toyota is now #3 in car sales in the U.S., having passed DaimlerChrysler, and in fact came close to surpassing Ford for the #2 spot.

Here are the final 2006 standings:
